Completed the 12-day mountaineering course and absolutely loved it. Three instructors to nine students. I felt very safe and learned a great deal. Would certainly recommend to anyone interested in learning more about mountaineering or climbing. Instructors were knowledgeable and passionate about what they were teaching. AMS is one of the BEST in Alaska! Their guides are very professional with a high level of expertise! Our entire team Summited Denali this June 2016 and got down safely! Thank you! EDIT: AMS wanted to talk to me about my review and were very apologetic about the disorganization of the class and the inexperience of the instructors. AMS told me there were injuries and other staffing challenges which caused the instructors for our course to be changed at the last minute, and that is not typical for AMS. They cared enough to follow up and offered us additional teaching time next time we return to Alaska so I am increasing this from 2 stars to 3 stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not impressed. We took a two day Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Course from AMS and it was not a professional experience, more like doing something with friends. It was a last minute request and AMS said this was ok, because at this time of year there were many guides coming off Denali and one of them would teach our course. We showed up to find our two instructors were a college student working for AMS for the summer and a completely new person who had never worked for AMS before. One of them had never been to the glacier before where we did our training. We all sort of muddled through it together, but there were certainly some antics. The two instructors were good mountain people and safety minded, but things did not flow smoothly. Overall, I would be very careful arranging anything with AMS and would ask to know exactly who my guides are and read about them beforehand. The two people they sent to teach our class are not even listed on their website under "guides". Beware that if your trek (a 2-day in my case) is delayed because of weather, that YOU get involved in the decision of when to cancel. I was told that a decision was going to be made by 10 AM of the flight day. Well, 11 came and went, then 12, finally at 1:30, I called the trip because I was becoming suspicious that AMS' goal was to get us up to the glacier regardless of how late in the day it was so they could check it off as a trip and collect the fees. Make sure that you keep in the loop and make sure decisions are made with your interests in mind. I have no problem with a trip cancellation because of weather, as long as it is handled timely and with sensitivity to the clients' expected time on the mountain. Overall the crew was nice and helpful, and I'm sure the trip would have been great. Just don't be afraid to inject yourself when necessary.
